Digital Music Player for Elders : enLight
Interaction and Visual Interface Design,

Jon Zimmerman

The goal of this project was to design a fixed digital music player for elder users (ages 65-95), considering the emotional connection between music and person in their context, contextual integration, and social interactions—how a music player facilitates connections between music and personal significance, supports lifestyle and strengthens enacted social roles.

Our initial research phase consisted of interviews with several elder couples and understanding the competitive landscape of technology products geared towards elders. Rapid concept generation, interaction re-labeling, and brainstorming produced several scenarios and concepts for initial ideas, that were validated through subsequent review with our initial research participants.

Our final product was envisioned by a video sketch that illustrated the product in use—a digital music player geared towards the active elder in their work/hobby space. Integrated into a task lamp, the music player preserves the physical artifacts of music while integrating the tasks related to music-playing seamlessly into the workspace of the active, creative elder.
